What Is ConTact C.A.R.E?
A Commonsense Approach to Real Ease. Why might you need ConTact C.A.R.E? You may suffer pain, discomfort, tension, you may feel 'stuck', you might be prone to migraine, back pain, neck pain, headaches, anxiety, depression, old sports injuries, carpal tunnel, concussion... we can work on anything that ails you, really.
When you suffer a surprise impact, whether it be a fall, a car accident, or other sudden knock like a sports injury, the physical pressure of the impact, and the sensory shock, get locked into your skeleton. This is referred to as a 'flinchlock'. Your body will flinch and twist away from the source of the impact automatically in order to protect itself, before you've consciously processed what is happening. A simple way to understand a flinchlock is to think of it like a bayonet lightbulb fitting - once you put the lightbulb in the fitting it's locked in there through the mechanism of twisting, and pressure.
The body must then carry this injury that has become locked into the system, and does the best it can to re-organise itself around the extra pressure it is carrying. The initial injury will heal, but the body will be compensating in some way to carry the flinchlock sustained. Over time, this compensation results in aches, pains, dysfunction and tension. What your body originally did in order to try and protect you, is causing you problems. It is no longer a useful response now that the initial threat has passed.
ConTact C.A.R.E. seeks to find the source of this trapped pressure, and then a supportive hold and gentle pressure is applied, similar to the way you push the lightbulb in to the fitting and twist it before it will release. This allows the flinchlock to release, and enables the body to find its natural equilibrium. Once your body recognises that it no longer needs to hold onto the defense mechanism it employed to protect itself during the original injury, you can drop out of fight mode, back into rest mode where healing can occur.
It's important to acknowledge here that you don't have to know what is causing your issue - you don't have to have a history of a car accident or major trauma in order for conTact C.A.R.E to work for you. We can simply go looking and work on what comes up. It's always fascinating when a long-forgotten memory pops up during or after a flinchlock release!
What Can I Expect From A Session?
First and foremost, we always work toward comfort and away from pain. Before you arrive, think about how you get comfortable, and what things work for you personally as pain relief. The most important part of a session is your comfort. I'll listen to how you describe your issue, and I'll observe the way you carry yourself to learn where the flinchlock is located.
If you find you're most comfortable seated, or even standing up, then that is how we will work. However, very often we'll start with you lying on a massage table in the same position that you sleep in. This is by far the most important part of the equation - you must be comfortable - so if something becomes uncomfortable, it's really important that you let me know right away - don't try and "tough it out". From here, I'll use gentle touch to find the site of the flinchlock/s. Once located, gentle, comfortable pressure and a supportive hold is used to release the flinchlock.
Allow an hour for a session, though after the initial consult, sometimes 45mins is all we need. Comfortable clothing is recommended.
Expect a period of 2-3 days after a session for your body to integrate the changes. It can take 3-4 sessions to see lasting change depending on what you are carrying.

About Me
Known as Tori by friends and family, I live with my husband and two kids, and our mini Schnauzer.
After school I studied neurophysiology at Otago and then went on to have a 14 year career as an optician, after a bit of globetrotting on my O.E.
I have long had an interest in the workings of the nervous system and over the years my interests extended to include hypnosis, yoga, feldenkrais and somatic body therapies.
This interest was mainly fuelled by my own experience of pain and discomfort -
which stemmed from three separate car accidents in my teens and twenties (none of which were my fault!)
After trying many different modalities in an attempt to fix my pain, I finally found ConTact C.A.R.E. - which relieved my pain and restored function.
I realised that I had to learn this discipline myself, so I could help others. The thing that I love about ConTact C.A.R.E. is that it's so gentle and supportive, and it feels very safe.
